Senate Confirms Merrick Garland as Attorney General

Garland Confirmed on Wednesday

Washington, D.C.

The Senate voted Wednesday to confirm Merrick Garland as attorney general, handing the reins of the Justice Department to a moderate judge who has pledged to restore the agency's independence and uphold the rule of law.

The vote was 70-30, with all but one Republican voting against Garland. The sole Republican to vote in favor was Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.

Garland, 68, is a former federal judge and prosecutor who has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit since 1997. He was nominated by President Joe Biden in January.

In his confirmation hearings, Garland pledged to restore the Justice Department's independence, which he said had been compromised under the previous administration. He also said he would uphold the rule of law and protect the civil rights of all Americans.

Garland's confirmation is a major victory for Biden, who has made restoring the Justice Department's independence a top priority. It is also a sign that the Biden administration is committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the civil rights of all Americans.
