Blue Jays acquire Whit Merrifield in buzzer-beater trade
Trade Deadline deal adds second baseman and outfielder to Blue Jays roster
Merrifield was traded from the Royals to the Phillies in May but the move was ultimately unsuccessful
TORONTO, ON - The Toronto Blue Jays pulled off a buzzer-beater ahead of Tuesday's Trade Deadline, acquiring second baseman and outfielder Whit Merrifield from the Kansas City Royals.
Merrifield, 33, is a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner who has spent his entire career with the Royals. He is a versatile player who can play second base, third base, and the outfield.
The Blue Jays sent a package of prospects to the Royals in exchange for Merrifield, including outfielder Samad Taylor and pitcher Max Castillo.
Merrifield is expected to join the Blue Jays in Toronto on Wednesday.
